Whiteaker Acting President of BCCPAC

Burnaby, May 11, 2009: President Ron Broda resigned from the presidency of the BC Confederation of Parent Advisory Councils (BCCPAC) on May 2 during the organization’s Annual General Meeting at the Radisson President Hotel and Suites in Richmond.

That same day Ann Whiteaker was elected First Vice President. Effective immediately, Whiteaker became Acting President, according to the BCCPAC Constitution and Bylaws. Whiteaker is from school district 61, Victoria.

Other Board members elected include Ida Middleton, (from school district 52, Prince Rupert) who was elected Treasurer. Steve Baker (school district 39, Vancouver) and Deborah Garrity (school district 41, Burnaby) were elected as Directors.

This is Baker’s second two-year term as Director. Middleton has been serving as a Director since a by-election last year. Garrity is the only new member to the Board and will wait 30 days before assuming her position, as outlined in the BCCPAC Bylaws.

At the BCCPAC Annual General Meeting delegates passed a resolution asking BCCPAC to urge the Ministry of Education to re-examine and recalculate the ministry funding formula. The resolution says that parent advisory councils are being asked, and in many cases are agreeing, “...to fund curricular material, supplies, equipment, programs, technology and transportation on a regular basis across all of the curriculum areas.”

Another resolution that was carried called on BCCPAC to urge the Ministry of Education to mandate and provide the necessary resources to provide specific review policies to ensure the success of all Individual Education Plans for children with designated needs, regardless of the level of need. The intent here is to make sure all children have the support necessary to reach their full potential.
