BCCPAC: Parents Want Teacher Input

Vancouver, June 11: At a meeting today between members of the executives of the BC Confederation of Parent Advisory Councils and the BC Teachers' Federation, Ann Whiteaker, President of BCCPAC, urged BCTF to encourage its members to get involved with School Planning Councils (SPCs).

“Parents want teachers to be part of SPCs, without teachers  the SPC is missing the point of view of the educator,” said Whiteaker. SPCs develop an annual school plan that is a statement of goals, objectives, and strategies for improving student achievement and community values within the school.

“An SPC should represent the whole learning community. It is not just the five people who sign the school plan. Parents, teachers, students, school staff and administrators can all take part.”

Discussion also included establishing common ground regarding the FSA (Foundation Skills Assessment) tests. The two groups agree that the use of the data for ranking by the Fraser Institute should be stopped.
