2009 Educational Award Winner Tara Salm

Tara Salm is a remarkable young woman. Academically, she is in the top 5% of her school, Valleyview Secondary in Kamloops. She has also managed to be an elite athlete and an amazing volunteer. Tara has taken a leadership role in volunteering at her school. Since grade 10 she has been part of a four-person team that organizes a four-day Leadership Conference to teach other schools how to promote school pride.

One of her greatest accomplishments was co-chairing an Awake-a -thon that, over the past two years, has raised $46,000 for Free the Children, Habitat for Humanity and Hero Holiday. She also participated in a trip to Guatemala with Developing World Connections. Via Facebook, she organized donations of backpacks, filled with school supplies, soccer clothing, cleats and craft supplies. She delivered $4,000 worth of items overseas.

Tara is an excellent leader and team-builder. she is usually part of the organizing committee or the chair of the many initiatives she takes part in. She is able to motivate others and takes her responsibilities seriously. According to her teacher,Tara has a sense of justice and a high level of integrity which she uses to improve any group she works with. She demonstrates a maturity and competence unrelated to her age.

Tara's goal is to obtain a Bachelor degree in Kinesiology before entering sports medicine. She is now enrolled at the University of Calgary.
